Great (Old) Walsingham is considered by many to be one of the prettiest villages in the area, with local walks from the house to be enjoyed, including over the Stiffkey ford at the bottom of Westgate, so much fun for children for paddling and Pooh sticks. Further along the lane there is St Peter’s, built in 1320-1340 with its fine tracery nave windows. The other side of the lane there is a small wood and a large meadow with footpaths – a great place for an easy walk from and back to Orchard House. The village has a small Barns complex including an art gallery and a cafe/deli with home-made fare. Little Walsingham, the larger part of the village, can be reached easily enough by foot from two directions as it is only a mile away. A famous and venerable place of pilgrimage, the Priory Gardens and Walsingham Abbey grounds are well worth a visit. There are two pubs, both serving food and a Farm Shop with a butchery, local fruit and vegetables and a deli serving pies and pastries. Walsingham is only 4 miles from Wells-Next-the Sea, with its harbour and fine beaches running along to Holkham. There is a supermarket in Wells and fish and chips at the quay, also crabbing is a rewarding activity for children big and small alike. Holkham Hall is one of several Country Houses within easy reach of Walsingham and open to the public, the other two being the National Trust properties Blickling and Felbrigg. Further West the Houghton and Sandringham Estates are available. There is a collection of steam traction engines, fairground organs and rides at Thursford, just 4 miles away and a miniature steam train that runs from Little Walsingham to Wells.
Only four miles inland from the seashore, the coastline boasts a host of other picturesque and interesting villages to visit in addition to Wells, from Brancaster in the west to Blakeney and Cley-next-the-Sea in the east. Inland the delightful and bustling Georgian towns of Burnham Market and Holt also make a great day out and the surrounding lanes are great for walkers and cyclists alike.
